Cover Crops

While we’ve been harvesting incredible amounts from the beds we’ve planted, we have a few acres that we have just planted with cover crops, to build the soil in preparation for next year. Crops like buckwheat, which grows quickly, suppresses weeds and builds phosphorus in the soil, can help to make next year’s CSA crops that much better. Years ago, this land was home to dairy cows, but then it was hayed for years, which removes nutrients from the natural cycle of the field (in the form of hay, being trucked off to feed horses or cows elsewhere). Part of our desire farming this land is to help rebuild the soil and increase the fertility of this great piece of farmland, and cover crops are just one of many ways to do that.photo 1
